About Steven Koops
Steven Koops was a talented Australian rules footballer. He was known for playing as a half-forward flank or half-back flank. This means he played in a position that helped both attack and defend. He started his AFL career at a very young age.
His Early Football Days
Steven Koops grew up in Darwin. He played for the Southern Districts Football Club in the NTFL. Later, he joined the West Perth Football Club in the WAFL.
He was a very good junior player. He represented the Northern Territory in big championships for players under 18. In 1995, he won a special award called the Hunter Harrison Medal. This award was for being the best player in Division 2 of the championships.
Playing in the AFL
Steven Koops was chosen by the Fremantle Football Club in the 1995 AFL Draft. He was a "Zone Selection," which means Fremantle had a special right to pick him because of where he played before.
Time with Fremantle
Steven made his first AFL appearance in 1996. He was only 17 years old, making him the youngest player ever to debut for Fremantle. In his first four seasons, he played 16 games. Overall, he played 78 games for Fremantle over eight seasons.
Moving to the Western Bulldogs
After the 2003 season, Steven moved to the Western Bulldogs. He was traded for a draft pick, which is like exchanging players for a chance to pick a new player in the future.
His time at the Bulldogs was tough due to injuries. In 2004, he faced several injuries, which limited him to just 11 games. He had to retire from playing in 2005. He was only 26 years old at the time. In total, he played 89 AFL games across 10 seasons.
Steven Koops also had success outside the AFL. He was part of the West Perth Football Club teams that won championships in 1999 and 2003.
