Stig Oskar Sollander (born June 25, 1926 – died December 12, 2019) was a talented Swedish alpine skier. He was known for his amazing skills on the ski slopes. Stig competed in three Winter Olympic Games. He made history by winning Sweden's very first Olympic medal in alpine skiing.

Stig's Skiing Journey

Stig Sollander was born in Östersund, Sweden. He became a professional alpine skier. Alpine skiing involves racing down snow-covered mountains. Skiers go through gates on a special course. Stig was especially good at the slalom event. This race has many tight turns.

Olympic Achievements

Stig Sollander competed in the Winter Olympics three times. He took part in the 1948, 1952, and 1956 Games.

  • 1948 Winter Olympics: This was his first Olympic appearance.
  • 1952 Winter Olympics: He showed great skill in the slalom. He finished in fifth place.
  • 1956 Winter Olympics: This was his most successful Olympics. Stig won a bronze medal in the slalom event. This was a huge moment for Sweden. It was their first-ever Olympic medal in alpine skiing!

Their daughter, Lotta Sollander, even competed in the 1972 Winter Olympics. Stig Sollander passed away in December 2019. He was 93 years old. His legacy as a pioneering Swedish skier lives on.
