How Did Stingray Point Get Its Name?

The name "Stingray Point" comes from an exciting event that happened a long time ago. It involves a famous explorer named Captain John Smith in the 1600s.

Captain John Smith's Adventure

Captain John Smith was exploring the area with his men. They were fishing in the waters near the point. Suddenly, Captain Smith was stung by a stingray! It might have been an Atlantic stingray or a Cownose ray. The sting was very serious, and Captain Smith was badly hurt. He even thought he might not survive and gave instructions about what to do with his body.

Luckily, he was treated with hot compresses. By evening, he felt much better and was even able to eat the very ray that had stung him!

The Legend of Antipoison Creek

There's a local story about how Captain Smith was saved. The legend says a native medicine man helped him. The medicine man used a special mudpack made from mud found in a nearby creek. This mudpack supposedly helped heal Captain Smith. Because of this story, the creek has been known as Antipoison Creek ever since.
