Stone Barn Farm is a special old farm on Mount Desert Island in Maine. It is one of the few farms left from a long time ago. The farm has a unique stone barn built in 1907. There is also an old farmhouse and a carriage barn from around 1850.

This farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This means it is an important historical site that should be protected. A group called the Maine Coast Heritage Trust helps to look after the land.

What Makes Stone Barn Farm Special?

Stone Barn Farm covers a large area of land, about 167 acres. It is located in a quiet, countryside part of Bar Harbor. The farm has fields, marshland, and lots of woods.

The main buildings are close to Crooked Road. These include the farmhouse, the carriage barn, and the famous stone barn. The stone barn has a special roof shape called a gambrel roof. Its first floor is made of stone and granite. This granite came from a nearby place called Otter Creek.

The farmhouse is one and a half stories tall. It has a front porch with a sloped roof. The carriage house is a single story building. It has a sliding door that opens to the inside. The stone barn is built from natural stones found in the area. It has a large wooden door.

A Look at the Farm's History

The farmhouse and carriage house were likely built between 1850 and 1860. Richard Paine (1828–1913) was the first owner and builder of the farm. In 1860, his farm was about 45 acres. Most of this land was not yet cleared for farming.

In 1907, Richard Paine's son, Willis, sold the farm. It was bought by the Shea Brothers, a company that built things with stone. They might have built the stone barn to show off their building skills. Later, the Shea Brothers even rented the farm back to the Paine family for a while.

In 1963, Harry and Mary "Cindy" Owen bought the farm. In 2001, they worked with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. They made an agreement to protect the farm's land forever. This agreement is called a conservation easement. In 2019, the Maine Coast Heritage Trust bought the farm to continue protecting it.
