The Stone Forest or Shilin (Chinese: ; pinyin: Shílín) is an amazing natural wonder in China. It's a huge area of unique limestone rock formations, covering about 500 square kilometers. You can find it in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan province, about 90 kilometers east of the city of Kunming.

These tall rocks look like they are growing right out of the ground! Many of them resemble giant petrified trees, making it seem like a forest made entirely of stone. It's truly a sight to behold! Since 2007, two special parts of the Stone Forest – the Naigu Stone Forest and Suogeyi Village – have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This means they are considered very important natural places for everyone to protect. The Stone Forest is also a top-rated tourist spot in China.

Shilin's unique rock formations create a stunning landscape.

The Shilin National Scenic Area is a vast park, covering 400 square kilometers. It's divided into seven main areas, each with its own special charm:

  • Greater & Lesser Stone Forests: These are the most famous parts, sometimes called the Lizijing Stone Forest.
  • Naigu Stone Forest: Another incredible area with unique rock shapes.
  • Zhiyun Cave: A fascinating cave to explore.
  • Lake Chang: Also known as "Long Lake."
  • Lake Yue: Also known as "Moon Lake."
  • Dadieshui Waterfall: A beautiful waterfall.
  • Qifeng Cave: Another interesting cave.

These incredible rock formations were shaped by nature over a very long time. Scientists believe they are more than 270 million years old! Today, the Stone Forest is a popular place for visitors from all over the world. Many people take bus tours from Kunming to see this natural wonder. There are also hotels nearby for those who want to stay longer.

How the Stone Forest Formed

The story of the Stone Forest began about 270 million years ago. Back then, this entire area was covered by a shallow sea. Over millions of years, layers of sand and a type of rock called limestone built up at the bottom of this sea.

Ancient Seas and Rock Layers

Imagine the bottom of a calm, shallow ocean. Tiny sea creatures and minerals settled there, slowly forming thick layers of rock. The main rock here is limestone, which is a common type of rock often made from the shells and skeletons of ancient sea life. Another rock found in some parts is dolomite, which is similar to limestone.

Nature's Sculpting Tools

After millions of years, the land slowly began to rise, pushing these rock layers out of the sea. Once exposed to the air, wind and water started their work. Rainwater, which is slightly acidic, slowly dissolved parts of the limestone. Over vast amounts of time, this process carved out the amazing pillars and shapes we see today. Think of it like water slowly eroding a sugar cube, but on a giant scale and over millions of years! The cracks and weaknesses in the rock guided the water, creating the deep valleys and tall, slender stone trees that make up the Stone Forest.

Plants of the Stone Forest

The Shilin Karst area is home to many different kinds of plants and trees. Even though it's a rocky place, nature finds a way to thrive! Here are some of the types of forests and plants you can find:

  • Evergreen broad-leaved forests: These forests have trees that keep their leaves all year round. Examples include Cyclobanopsis glancoides and Castanopsis delavayi.
  • Sclerophyllous evergreen broad-leaved forests: These trees also keep their leaves, but their leaves are often tougher and smaller, adapted to drier conditions. You might see Quercus cocciferoides here.
  • Deciduous broad-leaved and subtropical needle-leaved forests: These forests have a mix of trees that lose their leaves in certain seasons and trees with needle-like leaves, like the Pinus yunnanensis (Yunnan Pine).
  • Lake vegetation: Around the lakes, you'll find water plants like Ottelia acuminata.

Many other unique plant species grow here too, some found only in this region of Asia!

Legends and Festivals

The Stone Forest is not just a natural wonder; it's also rich in local culture and stories.

According to a beautiful legend, the forest is the birthplace of a girl named Ashima. She was a lovely girl from the Yi people, one of China's ethnic groups. The story says that after falling in love, she was not allowed to marry the person she chose. Because of her sadness, she turned into a stone in the forest. You can still see a famous rock formation that bears her name today!

Every year, on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, the Yi people celebrate the exciting Torch Festival (火把节). During this festival, people enjoy traditional folk dances and friendly wrestling competitions. It's a vibrant celebration of their heritage and community.
