Stone Head is a small, unincorporated community located in Brown County, Indiana, in the United States. It is known for a unique stone sculpture that gave the community its name.
The Story of Stone Head
The community of Stone Head gets its name from a special stone sculpture. This sculpture was carved in 1851 by a person named Henry Cross. It was originally a mile marker, helping people know how far they had traveled.
For a short time, from 1890 to 1891, Stone Head even had its own post office. This shows it was a small but recognized place.
The Famous Stone Sculpture
The stone head sculpture has an interesting history. In 1974, the entire sculpture, including its base, went missing. Police found it four months later in an apartment in Indianapolis. Two teenagers were using it as a hat rack!
This historic sculpture, along with the road marker, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
Sadly, in November 2016, the head part of the carving was broken off and has not been found since. To honor Henry Cross and the lost sculpture, a new monument was placed in October 2017. It was created by Casey Winningham, who is a master stone carver from Indiana.
People used to say that kissing the stone head would bring good luck!
