Stony Point Fashion Park is a cool outdoor shopping center in Richmond, Virginia. It first opened its doors in 2003.
This shopping center has big stores called 'anchor stores'. These include Saks Fifth Avenue, Dillard's, and CineBistro. One large spot used to be Dick's Sporting Goods, but it is empty now.
Stony Point is special because it's the only shopping center in the area that welcomes dogs! You can even find 'comfort stations' for pets around the center. Dick's Sporting Goods closed its store here in September 2018.
Building Stony Point: A Shopping Center Story
Stony Point Fashion Park was built because two big companies, Taubman Centers and ForestCity, both wanted to create a new, fancy shopping center in Richmond. They both had plans for a great place to shop.
The Court Decision and Two New Malls
The two companies even went to court to decide who would build their mall first. In the end, Taubman Centers built Stony Point. ForestCity built another big shopping center nearby called Short Pump Town Center. Short Pump is much bigger than Stony Point, almost twice its size.
When Construction Started and Ended
Work on Short Pump Town Center began in November 2000. Stony Point started building a bit later, in February 2002. Stony Point Fashion Park finally opened on September 18, 2003. This was the same day that Hurricane Isabel reached the nearby Outer Banks.
