Stour and Copperas Woods, Ramsey is a special place in Essex, England. It covers about 77 hectares, which is like 100 football fields! This area is called a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This means it is very important for its plants and animals.

The site is made of two separate woods: Stour Wood and Copperas Wood. Stour Wood is looked after by the Woodland Trust and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Copperas Wood is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust. Both groups work hard to protect these amazing natural spaces.

What Makes These Woods Special?

These woods are very old, with trees that have been growing for a long time. They are found on the southern edge of the Stour Estuary. This is a unique spot because it's the only place in Essex where woodlands meet the coast. This mix of habitats creates a home for many different types of wildlife.

Trees and Plants You Might See

The main tree you'll find here is the chestnut. These trees have been coppiced for many years. Coppicing is a traditional way of cutting trees to help them grow back stronger. It also creates different light levels on the woodland floor, which helps other plants grow.

On the ground, you'll see lots of brambles. Other interesting plants include yellow archangel and dog's mercury. These plants are important parts of the woodland ecosystem.

How to Visit the Woods

The B1362 road runs along the south side of both woods. If you like walking, The Essex Way is a long-distance path that goes right through Copperas Wood. It's a great way to explore and enjoy nature.
