The Story of Straloch Castle
Before Straloch House was built, there was a strong castle on this land.
Early Owners: The Cheyne Family
The Cheyne family became the owners of the Straloch lands in the 1200s. They gained the land through a marriage between Reginald le Chen (d.1312) and a woman named Mary. Mary was the daughter of Freskin de Moravia. The land was then given to Reginald's second son, Francis le Chen. The Cheyne family owned Straloch Castle for more than 250 years!
Later Owners: The Gordons
In the 1500s, the Cheyne family sold the castle to John Gordon of Pitlurg. Later, Robert Gordon, who was famous for making maps, became the owner.
Straloch House: A New Beginning
The Gordon family eventually sold the Straloch lands in 1758. The new owner was a man named John Ramsey.
Building the Mansion
John Ramsey decided to take down the old castle tower. On the same spot, he built the beautiful mansion that we see today, known as Straloch House. This means the current house stands on a very historic piece of land!
