A view of Stratford International Station.

Stratford International is a modern train station in Stratford, London, United Kingdom. It was built to serve fast trains, especially those coming from the Channel Tunnel (which connects England and France). However, these long-distance trains do not currently stop here.

It is important not to confuse Stratford International with the older, larger Stratford station. The two stations are about 400 yards (366 meters) apart. Stratford International is also served by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and some local trains.

What is Stratford International?

Stratford International is a special train station in East London. It was designed to be a stop for very fast trains. These trains travel on a line called High Speed 1 (HS1). HS1 connects London to the Channel Tunnel, which goes under the sea to France.

Why Was It Built?

The station was built as part of a big project to improve train travel. The main idea was for international trains, like the Eurostar, to stop here. This would allow people to easily connect to other parts of London. It was also a key part of the plans for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The station helped bring visitors to the Olympic Park.

Trains at the Station

Even though the international trains do not stop here, Stratford International is still very busy. It serves different types of trains:

  • High Speed 1 (HS1) Domestic Trains: These are fast trains that connect London to places in Kent, like Ashford International and Ebbsfleet International. They are operated by Southeastern.
  • Docklands Light Railway (DLR): The DLR is a light rail system that runs mostly above ground. It connects Stratford International to the financial district of Canary Wharf and other parts of East London.
  • Local Trains: Some regular regional trains also stop at the station, connecting it to other areas of London and nearby towns.

How is it Different from Stratford Station?

Many people confuse Stratford International with the main Stratford station. Here are the key differences:

  • Location: They are close but separate. Stratford International is newer and built specifically for high-speed lines.
  • Services: Stratford station is much larger. It has underground trains (the London Underground), more DLR lines, and many more national rail services. Stratford International has fewer services but includes the high-speed domestic trains.
  • Purpose: Stratford International was designed for future international connections and the Olympics. Stratford station is a major transport hub for daily commuters.
