The Hymenocallis rotata, also known as the streambank spiderlily, is a beautiful plant. It belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family, which includes many well-known flowers like daffodils. This plant is special because it is endemic to a specific part of the US state of Florida. This means it grows naturally only in that area and nowhere else in the world.

You can find the streambank spiderlily growing along the edges of streams in north-central Florida. These streams are usually fed by natural springs.

About the Streambank Spiderlily

The streambank spiderlily is a perennial herb. This means it is a plant that lives for more than two years. It comes back to life each year from its underground parts.

How it Grows

This plant grows from bulbs that are rhizomatous. A rhizome is like an underground stem that can store food. This helps the plant survive through different seasons and grow new shoots.

What it Looks Like

The streambank spiderlily has very showy flowers. They usually open in late spring and early summer. The flowers are white and have a unique shape.

The center part of the flower, called the corona, is special. In most plants of its kind, this part is shaped like a funnel. But in the streambank spiderlily, it is rotate, meaning it's flat and circular, like a wheel. It also has a yellow-green spot in the middle.
