Street, Maryland facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Street is a small community located in the countryside of northern Harford County, Maryland, in the United States. It's a place where people live and work, but it's not officially a city or town with its own government.

Welcome to Street, Maryland

One of the most important areas within Street is a village called Highland. This village was once a busy stop on the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad. The train station, located at milepost 38.6, helped local farms transport their goods. The railroad stopped carrying passengers in 1954. It then stopped carrying freight, or goods, in 1958.

Highland Village: A Key Spot

Highland is still a central part of Street today. The main post office for the entire Street community is located right in Highland village. This makes it a hub for mail services.

Schools and Community Hubs

Highland village also has a history with schools. It was once home to Highland High School. This school later became Highland Elementary School. When a new school, North Harford Elementary School, opened, Highland Elementary School closed its doors.

Today, that large building is still very important to the community. It now serves many purposes. It houses the alternative Highlands School, which offers different learning styles. It also hosts Mason-Dixon Community Service, which helps people in the area. The Highland Senior Center is there too, providing activities for older adults. And, as mentioned, the Street post office is also located in this building.

Fun and History in Street

Street is also home to Habonim Dror Camp Moshava. This is a popular summer camp where kids and teens can have fun and learn.

The community of Street has several places that are important for their history. These places are so special that they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect buildings and sites that are important to American history.

The Col. John Streett House was added to this list in 1973. Later, in 1993, Gladden Farm and the Mill Green Historic District were also recognized for their historical value. These sites help us remember the past of Street and the people who lived there.
