Strepsils is a well-known brand of throat lozenges. These lozenges are made by a company called Reckitt Benckiser, which is based in both the UK and the Netherlands. Strepsils throat lozenges are used to help relieve the discomfort you might feel from infections in your mouth and throat.

What Are Strepsils?

Strepsils are like small candies that you slowly dissolve in your mouth. They are designed to help soothe a sore throat. They contain special ingredients that work to fight germs that cause throat and mouth infections.

How Strepsils Help Your Throat

The main ingredients in Strepsils are called dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amylmetacresol. These are mild antiseptics. Antiseptics are substances that can kill or stop the growth of germs, like bacteria, that cause infections. Some types of Strepsils also have ascorbic acid, which is also known as vitamin C.

Other ingredients that help make the lozenges work and taste good include menthol, tartaric acid, and propylene glycol. While these ingredients help fight germs, it's important to know that research has not shown that they can make an infection go away faster or make it less severe.

Different Kinds of Strepsils

There are different types of Strepsils for various needs:

  • Some Strepsils, like "Extra Strepsils," use a different active ingredient called hexylresorcinol.
  • "Strepsils Sore Throat and Nose Covered" contains 8 milligrams of menthol, which can help clear a stuffy nose.
  • Another product, once called "Strepsils Intensive" but now known as "Strepfen," has a stronger ingredient called flurbiprofen. This is also used for sore throats.

In some countries, like Australia, Argentina, and Hungary, you can find "Strepsils Plus." These lozenges contain lidocaine, which is a numbing medicine, along with the usual antiseptic ingredients. In France and Spain, a similar product is sold as "Strepsils Lidocaine."

The History of Strepsils

Strepsils first came out in 1950. Back then, it was a mouthwash and was made by a company called Boots Healthcare. The throat lozenges we know today were introduced a few years later, in 1958.

In 2006, Reckitt Benckiser bought many brands from Boots Healthcare, and Strepsils was one of them. So, Strepsils has been helping people with sore throats for a very long time!

Where Strepsils Are Sold

Strepsils are sold all over the world, but sometimes they have different names in different countries:

  • In Italy, Strepsils are sold under the name "Benagol."
  • In Germany, they are now sold as "Dobendan" and "Dobensana." From 2009 to 2013, they were known as "Dobendan Strepsils."
  • In Norway, a product called "Repsil" is sold, but it does not contain the active ingredients found in Strepsils.
  • In North America, similar products are sold under the "Mucinex InstaSoothe" brand.

The name "Strepsil" actually comes from the word "Streptococcus." This is a type of bacteria that can cause some kinds of sore throats.

How to Use Strepsils

For adults, the usual recommendation is to take one lozenge every 2 to 3 hours. It's important to follow the instructions on the package.

Some Strepsils products, like "Strepsils Vitamin C-100," have added vitamin C. Each of these lozenges contains 1.2 milligrams of 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, 0.6 milligrams of amylmetacresol, and 100 milligrams of vitamin C.
