What is a Strike?
A strike often means hitting something or someone. It can also mean stopping an activity, like work, to make a point.
Strikes by Workers
When workers go on a strike action, it means they stop working. They do this to ask for better pay, safer working conditions, or other improvements from their employers. They hope that by stopping work, their employers will listen to their demands.
- A general strike happens when many workers in a whole city, area, or even a country stop working at the same time. This can have a big effect on daily life.
Other Kinds of Strikes
- A hunger strike is when someone decides not to eat. They do this as a way to protest something they believe is wrong. It's a very serious way to show strong feelings about an issue.
- A strike (attack) means hitting a person or thing, usually to cause harm or damage.
- A military strike is when a military force attacks a specific target. This could be a building, a group of vehicles, or another important location.
Strikes in Sports and Games
The word strike is also used in many sports and games:
- In baseball, a strike is called against a batter when they fail to hit a good pitch or swing at a bad one. If a batter gets three strikes, they are out.
- In bowling, a strike is when a player knocks down all ten pins with their very first ball in a frame. It's the best possible score for that turn!
