How the Strule Arts Centre Began

The Strule Arts Centre is a fairly new building. Before it was built, the old Town Hall in Omagh stood in its place. In 2003, the Town Hall was taken down to make room for this exciting new arts centre.

Building the centre cost about £10.5 million. It officially opened its doors on 8 June 2007. The building was designed by a group of architects named Kennedy Fitzgerald and Associates. They made sure it had a great view of the River Strule.

The Strule Arts Centre was part of a bigger plan to make the High Street, George Street, and Riverside areas of Omagh look better. This kind of project is called a "regeneration project." It helps to improve parts of a town. The centre had a special opening ceremony in January 2008. Important government officials, like Edwin Poots and Margaret Ritchie, were there to celebrate. They were ministers who helped with culture and community development in Northern Ireland.
