Stu Jackson's Basketball Journey
Playing and Early Coaching Years
Stu Jackson played college basketball at the University of Oregon and Seattle University. After playing, he became a coach. He worked as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon from 1981 to 1983. He also coached at Washington State University and Providence College.
Coaching the New York Knicks
In 1989, when he was 33, Jackson became the head coach of the New York Knicks. He was one of the youngest head coaches in NBA history at that time. During his time with the Knicks, the team won 52 games and lost 45. They even beat the Boston Celtics in the 1990 playoffs. However, they later lost to the Detroit Pistons, who went on to win the championship.
Leading the Wisconsin Badgers
After coaching in the NBA, Jackson became the head coach for the Wisconsin Badgers college team. He coached them during the 1992–93 and 1993–94 seasons. In 1994, he led the Badgers to the NCAA tournament.
Becoming a General Manager
After the 1994 tournament, Jackson left coaching to become the general manager for a new NBA team, the Vancouver Grizzlies. He was in charge of the team for its first five seasons.
Working for the NBA League Office
In June 2007, Stu Jackson took on a big role at the NBA. He became the executive vice president of basketball operations. This meant he was in charge of many important things. His duties included making sure games ran smoothly, creating schedules, and enforcing rules for player conduct. He also decided on penalties for players who broke rules on the court. He was also the head of the Competition Committee, which helps set rules for the game.
Leading College Conferences
On July 15, 2014, Jackson became a Senior Associate Commissioner for Men's Basketball in the Big East Conference. He worked in this role for nine years until 2023.
In March 2023, Stu Jackson was chosen as the fifth full-time Commissioner of the West Coast Conference. He officially started this job on April 24, 2023. One of his first big decisions was to add Oregon State University and Washington State University to the conference for some sports. This started in the 2024–25 school year.
In May 2024, the conference grew even more. Jackson's old college, Seattle University, was approved to become a full member of the West Coast Conference starting July 1, 2025. Jackson also joined the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee in May 2024.
Stu Jackson lives in New York and has four daughters. He earned a degree in business from Seattle University.
