Study Butte (pronounced STEW-dee BEWT) is a small community in Brewster County, Texas, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area identified by the government for statistics, but it's not an officially incorporated town.

In 2020, about 200 people lived in Study Butte. This was a bit less than the 233 people counted in 2010. Before 2000, Study Butte was part of a larger CDP called Study Butte-Terlingua.

Where is Study Butte Located?

Study Butte is in the southern part of Brewster County, Texas. The community of Terlingua is right next to Study Butte, to its southwest.

Texas State Highway 118 goes through Study Butte. This highway leads about 3.7 miles (6 km) southeast to the west entrance of Big Bend National Park. It also goes north for about 78 miles (126 km) to the city of Alpine.

The United States Census Bureau says that Study Butte covers a total area of about 4.7 square miles (12.3 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Study Butte has a desert climate. This means it gets a lot of sunshine all year round. The weather is usually very stable with high pressure. On climate maps, this type of weather is called "BWh."

Before the fall of 1996, high school students from Study Butte went to Alpine High School. That school is in the Alpine Independent School District. The Terlingua Common School District used to have two separate schools: Big Bend High and Terlingua Elementary.
