Stuffed mushrooms are a yummy dish made with edible mushrooms. People fill the mushroom caps with different tasty ingredients. They are usually cooked by baking or broiling. You can eat them warm, at room temperature, or even cold! Stuffed mushrooms can feel a bit like eating meat, and they are often served as a small bite before a meal (called an appetizer), a side dish, or a quick snack.

Making Stuffed Mushrooms

Making stuffed mushrooms starts with edible mushrooms. These are the most important part! First, the mushrooms are washed carefully. Then, their stems are gently removed. The mushroom caps are then ready to be filled.

What Goes Inside?

The inside of a stuffed mushroom can be filled with many different things. Sometimes, the chopped-up mushroom stems are even used in the filling!

Popular ingredients for the filling include:

  • Bread crumbs
  • Spinach
  • Tomato
  • Cheese
  • Onion and garlic
  • Herbs like basil, chives, tarragon, and parsley
  • Meats such as sausage or pork
  • Egg
  • Spices, salt, and pepper

Sometimes, the filling ingredients are cooked a little bit first. This is called "sautéing." Before cooking, a little olive oil might be drizzled over the mushrooms.

How Are They Cooked?

Stuffed mushrooms are usually placed on a baking pan or dish. They are then cooked in an oven by baking or broiling. Baking uses heat to cook slowly, while broiling uses strong heat from above to brown them quickly.

You can also cook stuffed mushrooms in other ways. Some people cook them on skewers, which are long sticks. They can even be cooked on a rotisserie, which slowly turns them over heat.

As the mushrooms cook, they tend to get a little smaller. This is normal!

How to Enjoy Them

Stuffed mushrooms are usually served warm or at room temperature. But you can also eat them cold if you like! They make a great appetizer before a meal. They can also be a tasty side dish with your main meal, or just a quick snack.
