What the Story is About
The story takes place in 1952, in a small town in Iowa. It's about an eleven-year-old boy named Charlie Nebraska. Charlie's dad sadly passed away during the Korean War.
Charlie learns important lessons about racism and what it means to be a hero. This happens when he becomes friends with a Black man. This man used to play baseball in the Negro leagues, which were special baseball leagues for Black players.
Main Characters
Charlie Nebraska
Charlie is the main character, an eleven-year-old boy. He loves baseball, but he doesn't get picked for the local team, the Wildcats. His father died in the Korean War.
Will Draft
Will is Charlie's best friend. He plays on the Wildcats baseball team.
Brad Lobo
Brad also plays for the Wildcats. He is a bully and often bothers Charlie.
Luther Peale
Luther becomes a good friend and father figure to Charlie. He used to be a player in the Negro leagues. Luther hurt his arm after a pitching accident.
