Park History and Features

From Old Site to Green Space

Stuyvesant Cove Park was built on land that used to be a cement plant and a parking lot. This type of land is called a "brownfield site." It means the land was used for industry before. The park was created after a big building project, called Riverwalk, did not happen. That project would have included homes, offices, and a hotel.

Park Creation and Design

The park was finished in 2002. It cost about $8.3 million to build. Donna Walcavage Landscape Architecture designed the park. You might notice a small "beach" area in the middle of the park. This was formed by extra cement dumped into the East River. It is not a place for people to walk on.

Fun Things to Do in the Park

At the north end of the park, you will find Solar 1. This is an environmental learning center. It has a small outdoor stage. Public events and performances often happen here. The park also has several gazebos, which are small open buildings. There is a bike path for cycling. You will find plenty of places to park your bike. Many picnic areas with tables and seats are available for visitors.

Learning About Native Plants

Since 2009, Stuyvesant Cove Park has been planted with many different native plants. Native plants are species that naturally grow in an area. In 2018, the park manager, Emily Curtis-Murphy, started a special program. The goal was to show off plants that originally grew in Manhattan and Long Island. This makes the park like an outdoor classroom. Students from local schools can visit and learn about nature. These plants help local wildlife, like birds and butterflies.
