Styx Branch is a small stream located in Sevier County, Tennessee in the United States.
Where Styx Branch Flows
The Styx Branch begins high up on the south side of Mount Le Conte. This starting point, called the headwaters, is about 5,600 feet (1,707 meters) above sea level.
From there, the stream flows downhill. It eventually joins another stream called Alum Cave Creek. The place where two streams meet is called a confluence.
The confluence of Styx Branch and Alum Cave Creek is about 4,117 feet (1,255 meters) above sea level.
Why the Name 'Styx'?
The name Styx Branch comes from an ancient Greek myth. In Greek mythology, the River Styx was a famous river. It was believed to separate the world of the living from the underworld.
This stream in Tennessee was named after that mythical river.
