Suboestophora hispanica is a type of small land snail that breathes air. It is a mollusk from the group called gastropods. These snails belong to the family Trissexodontidae.

This snail is also known as the "type species" for its group, Suboestophora. This means it's the main example that helps scientists define and understand the whole group of Suboestophora snails.

Where Does This Snail Live?

Suboestophora hispanica is a special snail because it is endemic to Spain. This means it can only be found naturally in Spain and nowhere else in the world.

The first place where this snail was officially found and described by scientists was in Valencia, a city in Spain.

What Does S. hispanica Look Like?

The Suboestophora hispanica snail was first described in 1910 by a scientist named Gerard Pierre Laurent Kalshoven Gude. He originally called it Helicodonta hispanica.

Its shell has some interesting features:

  • Shape and Color: The shell is shaped a bit like a lens and is a brownish-yellow color. It's quite thin and lets some light through.
  • Texture: The very first coils of the shell are shiny, but the rest of the shell is dull. It has fine, close ridges that are curved. These ridges become more spread out on the last part of the shell.
  • Coils: The shell has about 5 and a half coils, or whorls. These coils are slightly rounded on top and flatter underneath.
  • Opening: The opening of the shell, called the aperture, looks like a crescent moon.
  • Size: The shell is quite small. It measures about 11 millimeters (less than half an inch) across its widest part and about 5 millimeters tall.
