Racing Career Highlights
Subzero's biggest win was the 1992 Melbourne Cup. This is one of Australia's most famous horse races. He was trained by Lee Freedman and ridden by jockey Greg Hall. The four-year-old horse loved the wet ground that day. He beat strong competitors like Veandercross and Castletown.
Winning the Melbourne Cup made Subzero very famous. He was one of the few grey horses to win this big race. Even though it was his last race win, his victory secured his place in racing history.
Life After Racing
After his racing career, Subzero retired. He was a big, almost white gelding with a very kind personality. He took on a special job as a clerk of the course's horse. This means he helped guide other racehorses at the track. He worked with Graham Salisbury, who was the long-time Clerk for Racing Victoria.
Subzero became quite a celebrity. He appeared on television shows and attended many charity events. He also visited schools, where he was very patient and gentle with children. Everyone loved meeting him.
Subzero's Later Years
In July 2008, Subzero fully retired from his duties. He had developed arthritis, which is a condition that affects joints. In October 2009, there was a concern about his medication. The special medicine he needed for his arthritis was hard to find in Australia. Luckily, it was found and brought from the United States. This allowed Subzero to continue his public appearances.
He remained gentle and patient, especially with kids. Subzero stayed with his good friend Graham Salisbury for many years. Graham Salisbury passed away in June 2020. Subzero himself was humanely put down on August 29, 2020. This was due to a heart condition. He was 31 years old and had lived a wonderful life.
