Suero de Quiñones (born around 1409 – died July 11, 1456) was a famous knight from León, a region in what is now Spain. People called him El del Passo, which means "he of the pass." He was a nobleman and writer.
Suero became very well-known for an event called the Paso Honroso (Passage of Honor). This was a special knightly challenge, like a jousting tournament. It happened at the Órbigo River in 1434.

Early Life of Suero de Quiñones
Suero was born in 1409 in the Kingdom of León. He was one of ten children. His father, Diego Fernández de Quiñones I, was a rich landowner. He was also known as El Afortunado, meaning "The Fortunate One." Suero's mother was María de Toledo.
By the 1420s, Suero and his older brother, Pedro de Quiñones, were active in politics. They were part of the court of Álvaro de Luna. He was a very important leader in the Crown of Castile.
Adulthood and Famous Challenges
In 1431, Suero fought in the Battle of La Higueruela. In this battle, the forces of John II of Castile tried to take the city of Granada. This was part of a long effort to reclaim lands in Spain.
The Paso Honroso Challenge
Suero became very famous in 1434 because of the Paso Honroso. This was a special event where knights would challenge others. It took place at the Hospital de Órbigo bridge over the Órbigo River.
From July 10 to August 9, Suero and ten friends set up camp. They stayed by the bridge in northwest Castile. They challenged every knight who wanted to cross the bridge to a joust. This bridge was on the Saint James's Way, a popular pilgrimage route. Thousands of pilgrims would cross it each summer.
Suero and his men promised to "break 300 lances" before leaving. After 166 battles, Suero and his knights were too hurt to continue. They declared their mission complete.
A local writer, Don Luis Alonso Luengo, wrote down everything that happened. This detailed story was later published as Libro del Passo honroso. This book made Suero and his men even more famous across Europe.
Suero's Legacy
Suero de Quiñones became a legendary figure in Spanish history. He was even mentioned in the famous 1605 Spanish novel Don Quixote. The main character, Don Quixote de la Mancha, speaks of him. The book was written by Miguel de Cervantes.
