Suiko period facts for kids
The Suiko period was an important time in Japanese history, lasting for about 25 years. It was part of the larger Asuka period. This era is named after Empress Suiko, who was a powerful ruler during these years (from 593 to 628 AD). The Suiko period itself is often thought of as the years from 604 to 628 AD.
How Time Was Tracked
During Empress Suiko's rule, Japan started using a special calendar system called the Jikkan Jūnishi. This system helped people keep track of years and events. It was used before Japan began using official "era names" (called nengō), which started later in 645 AD.
Key Events of the Suiko Period
- 604 AD: In this year, which was the 12th year of Empress Suiko's reign, Japan officially set up its first Imperial calendar. This helped organize time for the whole country.
- 628 AD: This year marked the end of the Suiko period. Empress Suiko decided to step down from her role as empress.
