Sujata Tewari (1938–2000) was an amazing Indian-American scientist who studied the brain. She was a neuroscientist, which means she worked to understand how our brains work. She was known for her important work with another scientist named Ernest Noble.

Early Life and Learning

Sujata Tewari was born and grew up in a place called Murshidabad in West Bengal, India. She started her journey in higher education right there in India.

She earned her first university degree, a bachelor's degree in chemistry, from Agra University in 1955. Chemistry is the study of what things are made of. Then, in 1957, she got a master's degree in biochemistry from Lucknow University. Biochemistry is a special type of chemistry that looks at the chemical processes happening inside living things.

Sujata then moved to Canada to continue her studies. She earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from McGill University in 1962. A Ph.D. is a very high university degree that shows someone is an expert in their field. Later, in 1996, she also received a Psy.D. from the American Behavioral Studies Institute. A Psy.D. is another advanced degree, often focused on how people think and behave.

Her Work and Discoveries

After finishing her studies, Sujata Tewari worked for a while at a hospital in California that helped military veterans. Later, she joined the University of California, Irvine. This was an important step in her career as a neuroscientist, where she continued her research into the human brain.
