Suleiman Mahmoud al-Obeidi (Arabic: سليمان محمود العبيدي; 1949 - 6 October 2020) was an important military leader in Libya. He was known for his role during the Libyan Civil War.

Suleiman Mahmoud's Military Path
Suleiman Mahmoud started his career as a commander in Muammar Gaddafi's army. He was in charge of the military area around Tobruk.
Joining the Opposition
During the Libyan Civil War, Suleiman Mahmoud was one of the first high-ranking army officers to join the side against Gaddafi. Many soldiers who joined the rebels followed his orders. This was before another top commander, General Abdul Fatah Younis, passed away in July 2011.
Leading the Army
After General Younis's death, Suleiman Mahmoud became the new army commander for the anti-Gaddafi forces. He moved his main office to Tripoli after the success of a big operation there. He worked to bring together the different groups fighting against Gaddafi in western Libya. Their goal was to create one strong military force under the National Transitional Council.
His Passing
Suleiman Mahmoud passed away on 6 October 2020. He was 71 years old. He died from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Libya.
