Sulphur Well is a small place in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, United States. It is called an unincorporated community because it is not an official town or city.
History of Sulphur Well
Sulphur Well got its name from a special natural spring. A local landowner found this spring while drilling for salt. This happened before the American Civil War.
The landowner then opened a hotel near this spring. Soon, more people started to live in the area. A small village began to grow around the hotel.
By 1878, the community had its own school. A post office also opened there on July 30, 1879. In 1883, about 100 people lived in Sulphur Well. It had several stores, the hotel, and a flour mill. A flour mill is a place where grain is ground into flour.
Geography of Sulphur Well
Sulphur Well is located in the northern part of Metcalfe County. You can find it along Kentucky Route 70. It is about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of where Kentucky Route 70 meets U.S. Route 68.
