Sumatra is a very small place in Rosebud County, Montana, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the larger county. In Sumatra, you'll find a church, a post office, and a few houses. These buildings are surrounded by wide-open ranch land.
The Story of Sumatra
How Sumatra Got Started
Sumatra began in 1905. It was first a stop for trains on the Milwaukee Road railway. When it was a train stop, it was called "Summit."
Why the Name Changed
In 1910, a post office opened in the community. At that time, the name was changed from Summit to Sumatra. The new name came from a large island called Sumatra, which is located in Indonesia, far across the world!
