The Summers Hotel was a special place in Jackson, Mississippi, USA. It was the first hotel in the city owned by a Black person. W. J. Summers started the hotel in 1944.

During a time called segregation, many Black musicians stayed at the Summers Hotel. Segregation was when people were kept separate based on their race. This hotel gave Black travelers and artists a safe and welcoming place to stay.

The Subway Lounge

In 1966, a cool music spot called the Subway Lounge opened in the hotel's basement. It became a famous place for live music.

Music and History

The Subway Lounge was known for its regular jazz music shows. From the mid-1980s, it also had popular late-night blues shows. Many famous musicians played there. It was a very important part of Jackson's music scene.

The lounge was even shown in a 2003 documentary film called Last of the Mississippi Jukes. This movie helped share the story of the Subway Lounge with more people.

A Special Marker

Today, the Summers Hotel and Subway Lounge are remembered. There is a special marker for them as part of the Mississippi Blues Trail. This trail celebrates important places in the history of blues music in Mississippi. The hotel was torn down in 2004, but its history lives on.
