The Sun and Salsa Festival was a fun yearly event held in the Kensington area of Calgary, Alberta. It happened every summer, usually in mid-July. The festival took place along 10 Street and Kensington Road. These streets were closed to cars, making it safe for everyone to walk around.

Many people loved this festival! By 2010, about 100,000 visitors came each year. Sadly, the festival was stopped in 2015. This was because of construction work in Kensington. The community was upgrading sidewalks, trees, and streetlights. The festival has not happened since then.

What Happened at the Festival?

The Sun and Salsa Festival had many exciting things to see and do.

  • Salsa Competition: A big part of the festival was a competition to find the best salsa! People competed for the "Best Salsa," "Best Presentation Salsa," and "Most Creative Salsa."
  • Shopping and Food: There were many different booths. You could find tasty food and cool items to buy from local shops.
  • Fashion Show: The festival also had a fashion show. This showed off clothes from the fashion stores in the Kensington area.
  • Entertainment: There were several stages with live music and dancing. This kept everyone entertained throughout the day.

The festival was also a way to help others. It raised money for charities. In 2010, the money went to the Brenda Strafford Centre and Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids. These groups help people in need in Calgary.

From 2005 to 2011, the festival included the Miss Sun and Salsa Pageant. A pageant is a type of competition where people show off their talents and personalities. Each year, three young women were chosen: "Miss Sun and Salsa," "Sun Princess," and "Salsa Princess."

These winners became special representatives for the Kensington community. They helped promote the festival and the area all year long. They attended events both in Calgary and other places.
