Sunny Hill Park on a sunny spring afternoon

Sunny Hill Park is a large, beautiful park located in Hendon, which is part of the London Borough of Barnet in England. It covers about 22 hectares (that's like 54 football fields!) and is mostly covered in grass. From the park, you can enjoy amazing views looking north and west. This park, along with the nearby Hendon Churchyard, is considered a special place for nature, known as a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation.

History of Sunny Hill Park

This area used to be known as Sunnyhill Fields. It was once owned by a place called Church Farmhouse, which is now the Church Farmhouse Museum right next door.

In 1921, the local council, which was then called the Hendon Council, bought about 16 acres of this land to create a park for everyone to enjoy. The park officially opened its gates in 1922. A few years later, in 1929, the park got even bigger when the council bought more land.

There's a part of the park in the south-east corner with scattered trees that used to be part of St Mary's Churchyard. This area is very old and important for history, as archaeologists have found signs that people lived there during Roman and Anglo-Saxon times! Even today, you can still see old hedgerows in the park that show where the field boundaries used to be, and there are many old, tall trees.
