Sunnyside Hospital was a special hospital in Christchurch, New Zealand. It opened in 1863 and closed in 1999. It was the first hospital of its kind in Christchurch.
At first, it was called the Sunnyside Lunatic Asylum. Its first patients were 17 people who had been staying in the Lyttelton jail. Today, some mental health services, like Hilmorton Hospital, are still on the old Sunnyside Hospital land.
Designing Sunnyside Hospital
The main design for Sunnyside Hospital was created by Benjamin Mountfort. He was a famous architect in New Zealand who designed buildings in the Victorian Gothic style. Another architect, John Campbell, designed the administration building.
Hospital Staff
The very first leader of Sunnyside Hospital was Edward William Seager. He was called the superintendent. Many nurses and other staff worked hard to care for the patients at Sunnyside Hospital over the years.
Sunnyside Hospital Football Team
Did you know that staff from the hospital had a football team? This team was very good! They were the first team from Christchurch to win the Chatham Cup in 1926. The Chatham Cup is a big football competition in New Zealand.
