Sunset Falls is a powerful waterfall located in Washington state. It is the last of three large waterfalls on the South Fork Skykomish River. This amazing waterfall drops a long way down a narrow, fast-moving chute.

The water at Sunset Falls drops about 104 feet (34 meters). It flows through a chute that is almost 300 feet (91 meters) long. The river here can reach speeds of up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour! When there is a lot of water, it can even shoot out up to 30 feet high. This happens because of special holes in the falls called potholes.

Visiting Sunset Falls

It is currently not possible for the public to visit Sunset Falls. There are no safe ways for people to access the area.

Daring Adventures at Sunset Falls

Sunset Falls is known for its strong currents and challenging conditions. Because of this, it has attracted some brave adventurers over the years.

Al Faussett's Canoe Ride

On May 30, 1926, a famous stunt performer named Al Faussett did something incredible. He rode over Sunset Falls in a canoe! Hundreds of people watched him from the rocks nearby. Al Faussett was very lucky and only had minor pains after his daring stunt. He later went on to run other waterfalls, including Eagle Falls. He also ran many other falls in Oregon and Idaho.

Kayaking the Falls

More recently, some local kayakers have successfully run Sunset Falls. Two of the most notable are Rob McKibbin and Sam Grafton. Running these falls is considered extremely difficult and dangerous. It is known as a "Class 6 rapid," which means it has unavoidable and potentially very risky parts.
