Super Bowl XX facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Super Bowl XX was the 20th Super Bowl championship game. It was played on January 26, 1986, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

The game featured two strong teams: the Chicago Bears from the NFC and the New England Patriots from the AFC. The Bears had an amazing season with 15 wins and only 1 loss, while the Patriots had 11 wins and 5 losses.

Before the game, Wynton Marsalis performed the national anthem. The halftime show featured the group Up With People. The Chicago Bears won the game with a score of 46-10, earning their first-ever Super Bowl title.

After their big win, the Bears did not visit the White House right away. This was because of the tragic Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, which happened just days after the game. However, in 2010, the team finally got to visit the White House. Sadly, two famous players, Walter Payton and Dave Duerson, could not attend because they had passed away.

How the Game Unfolded

The game started with a bit of a challenge for the Bears. Their star player, Walter Payton, fumbled the ball, giving the New England Patriots a chance to score first. The Patriots' kicker, Tony Franklin, made a field goal, putting them ahead.

But the Bears quickly took control! Kevin Butler kicked two field goals for Chicago. Then, Matt Suhey scored a touchdown, giving the Bears the lead.

In the second quarter, Bears quarterback Jim McMahon scored a touchdown, and Butler kicked another field goal. The Bears kept scoring, adding three more touchdowns in the third quarter. The Patriots finally scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. However, Patriots quarterback Steve Grogan was tackled in his own end zone, which gave the Bears two more points!

Meet the Most Valuable Player

The player who stood out the most in Super Bowl XX was Richard Dent, a defensive end for the Chicago Bears. He was named the Super Bowl MVP.

Dent had a fantastic game, getting 1½ sacks. A sack is when a defensive player tackles the opposing team's quarterback behind the line of scrimmage. The Bears' defense was incredibly strong, getting a Super Bowl record of 7 sacks in total. Richard Dent also forced two fumbles, which means he knocked the ball loose from an opposing player. His amazing performance helped the Bears win the championship!
