Superman and the Mole Men is an exciting superhero movie from 1951. It was made by Lippert Pictures. The film stars George Reeves as Superman and Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane. This movie was the very first feature film based on any DC Comics character.
The story is about reporters Clark Kent and Lois Lane. They visit a small town called Silsby. There, a new oil well is being drilled, aiming to be the deepest in the world. But the drill accidentally breaks into the home of strange, small creatures living underground. These creatures, called Mole Men, come to the surface at night. They glow in the dark, which scares the townspeople. The scared people form an angry group, wanting to hurt the visitors. Only Superman can step in to protect the Mole Men and stop a disaster.
What Happens in the Movie
Clark Kent and Lois Lane arrive in Silsby. They are there to report on the world's deepest oil well. One night, two small, bald creatures come out of the well. They scare the night watchman, who sadly dies. Lois and Clark find the dead watchman. Clark and the foreman look around for clues. Lois then sees one of the creatures and screams. But no one believes what she saw.
A doctor comes to check on the watchman. He leaves with Lois later. Clark stays to talk with the foreman. The foreman admits the well was closed. They feared they had hit something glowing, not oil. He shows Clark rock samples that glow brightly.
Meanwhile, the two Mole Men explore the town. The people are terrified by their strange look. Everything the Mole Men touch glows in the dark. This is because of a simple glowing effect. Soon, an angry group forms, led by Luke Benson. They want to kill the "monsters." Superman stops Benson and the group. He saves one creature that was shot. Superman takes the injured creature to the hospital. The second creature goes back down the well.
A doctor says the injured creature needs surgery to remove the bullet. A nurse is too scared to help. So, Clark offers to assist. Benson's angry group arrives at the hospital. They demand that the creature be given to them. Superman stands guard outside the hospital. Lois stands with him, but a shot from the group nearly hits her. Superman sends her inside. He then takes away the guns from the angry group.
Three more Mole Men come out of the drill shaft. This time, they have a strange weapon. They head towards the hospital. Benson and his group see them. Benson goes after them alone. The creatures fire their laser-like weapon at him. Superman jumps in front of the ray. He saves Benson's life, telling him he didn't deserve it. Superman brings the wounded creature from the hospital. He carries it as its friends return to the well. Soon after, the Mole Men destroy the drill shaft from underground. This makes sure no one can go up or down it again. Lois says, "It's almost as if they were saying, 'You live your lives ... and we'll live ours'."
