Keep On Wombling Superwombling

Superwombling was the fourth and last studio album made by the Wombles. It came out in September 1975. The Wombles were a popular music group based on characters from children's books and TV shows.

The songs on the album were recorded by Mike Batt, who sang and played keyboards. Other musicians, called "session musicians," helped out. They included Chris Spedding on guitars, Les Hurdle on bass, and Clem Cattini on drums. Ray Cooper played percussion, while Rex Morris and Eddie Mordue played saxophones. Jack Rothstein played the violin.

The album features many different music styles. You can hear rock, pop, blues, and reggae. There are also songs with barbershop harmony and even music that sounds like James Bond movie themes.

One special song is "The Myths and Legends of King Merton Womble and His Journey to the Centre of the Earth." This song is a funny copy, or "parody," of two other famous albums. Those albums were The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Rick Wakeman. These were "concept albums," which means all the songs tell one big story.

Even though Superwombling had several popular songs released from it, the album itself did not appear on music charts at first. Music charts show the most popular songs or albums. However, the album later sold enough copies to be certified Gold. This means it sold over 100,000 copies in the UK.

What Songs Are on the Album?

The Superwombling album has ten songs. Each song was written by Mike Batt. Here is a list of the tracks:

  • The Womble Shuffle (2:49)
  • The Myths and Legends of King Merton Womble and His Journey to the Centre of the Earth (5:27)
  • Down at the Barber Shop (1:59)
  • The Empty Tidy-Bag Blues (4:11)
  • Wombling White Tie and Tails (3:32)
  • Superwomble (3:23)
  • Miss Adelaide (She's Got a Lot of Knowledge) (3:57)
  • Wombles on Parade (3:41)
  • To Wimbledon with Love (3:50)
  • Nashville Wombles (4:55)

Which Songs Were Released as Singles?

Some songs from the album were released as "singles." A single is a song released on its own, usually to promote the album.

  • "Wombling White Tie And Tails"
  • "Superwomble"
  • "The Womble Shuffle"

Another song, "Down At The Barber Shop," was later released as a "B-side." This means it was on the other side of a single record, usually not the main song being promoted. It was on the B-side of the song "Let's Womble To The Party Tonight."

The song "Wombling White Tie And Tails" was also used in a movie. It was part of the soundtrack for the 1977 film called "Wombling Free."
