History of the Suraya Mosque
Early Middle Eastern Settlers
The area around Torreón has been home to people from the Middle East since the early 1900s. These families brought their traditions and beliefs with them.
Founding a Meeting Place
Even with many Middle Eastern families living there, it took some time to create a formal Islamic meeting spot. In 1983, about 35 people, whose families had come from the Middle East, started the first Islamic meeting house in Mexico. This meeting house was led by a person named Hassan Zain Chamut.
Building a Dedicated Mosque
One of the people who attended the meeting house was Elias Serhan Selim. He thought it would be great to have a special building just for worship. He offered to pay for the project. Elias Serhan Selim asked an architect named Zain Chamut to design the mosque. The goal was to create a building that looked both Islamic and like traditional Spanish architecture. Building the mosque started in 1986 and was completed three years later, in 1989.
