Rangdum
The beautiful Suru Valley near Rangdum.

The Suru Valley is a stunning valley located in the Ladakh region. This area is part of Jammu and Kashmir. A river called the Suru River (Indus) flows through it. This river is a smaller stream that joins the much larger Indus River. The valley sits very high up, about 3,000 meters (almost 10,000 feet) above sea level!

Two important towns in the valley are Kargil and Rangdum. The Suru Valley is separated from another beautiful area called Zanskar by a mountain pass. This pass is known as the Penzella Pass, located near Panikhar. You can find many willow and poplar trees growing here.

People and Culture in Suru Valley

About 25,000 people live in the Suru Valley. They are mostly from two main groups: the Dard people and people of Tibetan background.

Religion in the Valley

Most people in the Suru Valley follow a branch of Islam called Shi'a Islam. They became Muslim in the 1500s. Before that, many people in the valley followed Tibetan Buddhism. A leader named Thi-Namgyal helped with this change in the 16th century. While most people are Muslim now, you can still find Buddhists living throughout the valley, especially in the town of Rangdum.
