Susan Carter Holmes, born in 1933, is a special scientist who studies plants. She is known as a botanist and a taxonomist. A botanist is someone who studies plants, and a taxonomist is someone who names and organizes them into groups.
Susan Carter Holmes has found and described more than 200 different kinds of plants. Many of these plants belong to a big plant family called Euphorbiaceae. She often uses her maiden name, Susan Carter, when her plant discoveries and articles are published.
Discovering New Plants
Susan Carter Holmes works at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which is a famous place in England where many plants are studied and grown. She has spent a lot of time discovering and organizing plants, especially those from East Africa.
She focused on plants that are succulent, meaning they have thick, fleshy parts that store water, like cacti. Many of these plants belong to the Euphorbia and Monadenium groups. She also found about 20 different types of Aloe plants.
