Susan N. Herman was the president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for many years. She led this important group from October 2008 until January 2021. Ms. Herman is also a law professor. She has taught at Brooklyn Law School since 1980.

Her Early Life and Education
Susan Herman was born in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up on Long Island. She went to Barnard College and earned a degree in philosophy in 1968.
Later, she studied law at New York University School of Law. While there, she helped edit the New York University Law Review. This is a journal that publishes articles about law.
After law school, Ms. Herman worked for a court. She also helped people in prison with their legal issues.
What She Does Now
Susan Herman teaches law at Brooklyn Law School. She teaches about the U.S. Constitution and how criminal cases work. She also teaches classes on law and literature. Another topic she teaches is how fighting terrorism affects people's freedoms. She holds a special title there: the inaugural Ruth Bader Ginsburg Professor of Law.
She first started working with the ACLU as an intern when she was in law school. Before becoming president, she was the ACLU's main lawyer. She had also been on their board for 20 years.
Her Book and Media Appearances
Ms. Herman wrote a book called Taking Liberties: the War on Terror and the Erosion of American Democracy. It was published in 2011. This book won an award in 2012 for its focus on civil liberties.
She has appeared on many TV and radio shows. These include NPR, PBS, and NBC News. She has also written articles for newspapers and magazines. Some of these are The New York Times and Time.
In 2019, she was named one of the "Most Powerful Women in New York." This was by Crain's New York Business.

Susan Herman is married to Paul Gangsei. He is also a lawyer. They have one daughter.
