Susana Agustí Requena is a scientist from Spain who studies the ocean and the living things in it. She is called a biological oceanographer. She has traveled on more than 25 science trips to different oceans around the world, like the Arctic, Antarctic, Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. She was also a very important part of a big trip called the Malaspina Circumnavigation Expedition.

Today, she is a professor of Marine Science at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. She is also a professor at the University of Tromsø in Norway.

Early Life and Education

Susana Agustí went to the Autonomous University of Madrid in Spain. She earned her first degree there in 1982. Later, she completed her PhD at the same university in 1989.

Career and Ocean Research

Susana Agustí studies tiny plants in the ocean called photosynthetic plankton. These tiny plants are very important because they make their own food using sunlight, just like plants on land. She also looks at how the ocean's balance of life works.

Her main goal is to understand how global warming affects the oceans. She has studied how warmer temperatures impact the Arctic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Indian Ocean.

Leading Ocean Expeditions

From 1992, Susana Agustí worked as a researcher for the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). During this time, she led the first Spanish science trip to the Arctic in 2007. She also led a project called "Arctic Tipping Points." This project looked at how climate change affects the Arctic.

From 2011 to 2015, she was a special professor at the Oceans Institute of the University of Western Australia. Since 2015, she has been a Professor of Marine Science at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.

Studying the Red Sea

Susana Agustí also does important research on the Red Sea. She studies how higher water temperatures affect this sea. She also looks at other things that can stress ocean life, like UV-B radiation (a type of sunlight) and pollution that travels through the air to the ocean.

She was in charge of a section that studied ocean light, phytoplankton, and how the ocean produces and uses energy.
