Susie M. Barstow (born May 9, 1836 – died June 12, 1923) was an American painter. She was part of a group of artists called the Hudson River School. Susie Barstow was famous for her beautiful landscape paintings that often looked bright and full of light.

About Susie Barstow

Susie M. Barstow was born in New York City. Her father, Samuel Barstow, was a tea merchant. Her mother, Mary Tyler Blossom, came from a family with a long history in America.

Susie went to the Rutgers Female Institute in New York. She finished her studies there in 1853. She also traveled to Europe to get more art training. For several years, she taught art at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences.

Her Art Style

Barstow's paintings often showed calm and peaceful landscapes. They were filled with a bright, glowing light. She started showing her art at the National Academy of Design in 1858. This was a very important art institution. She also showed her work at the Brooklyn Art Association and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

One of her paintings, A Bit of Catskill Woods, was owned by a famous art collector named Thomas B. Clarke. For a long time, women artists did not have as many chances to show their work as men did. Because of this, Susie Barstow's art was not very well known. Later, art historians started to study the women artists of the Hudson River School. This helped her work become more recognized.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Susie Barstow's art has been shown in important exhibitions. In 2010, her work was part of "Remember the Ladies: Women of the Hudson River School." This show was at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site in New York.

In 2019, her art was featured in "The Color of the Moon: Lunar Painting in American Art." This exhibition was at the Hudson River Museum. Her paintings were shown alongside famous artists like Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt.

Susie's Love for Hiking

Susie Barstow loved to hike and explore nature. She was an early member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. She climbed hundreds of mountains in New York and New England. This included all the main peaks in the Catskill Mountains, White Mountains, and Adirondack Mountains. She also hiked in Europe, in places like the Alps and the Black Forest.

She often went on trips along the Hudson River and in the mountains. On these trips, she would hike, sketch, and paint. Susie found the usual women's clothing of her time difficult for hiking. So, she created her own hiking outfit. It included strong boots and shorter skirts worn with trousers. This was part of a movement that wanted more practical clothing for women. Susie Barstow never married.

Her niece, Susie B. Skelding, also became an artist. The two Susies often went on sketching trips together.
