The Sutton Center Historic District is a special area in Sutton, Massachusetts. It's like a time capsule showing how a New England village looked long ago. This district covers a large area of about 435 acres (176 hectares). It's centered around the main crossroads where Boston Road, Singletary Avenue, and Uxbridge Road meet.
What is Sutton Center?
Sutton Center is a quiet, rural village. Its important buildings are grouped together near the town common. The town common and the cemetery were first planned in 1719. This was just a few years after people started settling in the area in 1716.
Some houses in the district are very old, dating back to the mid-1700s or even earlier. It can be hard to know the exact age of some of these historic homes.
Important Buildings
There are a few key public buildings in Sutton Center:
- The Congregational Church was built in 1829. It's a beautiful example of old church architecture.
- The Town Hall was built in 1983. It stands where the town's first official town hall, built in 1885, used to be. This is where local government business happens.
- Rufus Putnam Hall was built in 1824. It started as a school building and a meeting place for a group called the Masons. Today, it's a museum that teaches about local history.
- There's only one old commercial building, called the Brick Block. It was built in 1839 and used to house businesses.
- You can also find a historic animal pound. This is a stone structure shaped like a rectangle. Long ago, it was used to hold farm animals that had wandered away from their homes.
Homes and Farms
Most of the Sutton Center Historic District is made up of homes and farm properties. The houses show many different styles from the 1700s to the 1900s. You can see how building styles changed over time.
Many old farm buildings from the 1800s have also survived. These are mostly barns. In total, there are more than 120 historic buildings and places that help tell the story of Sutton Center.
Why is it Special?
The Sutton Center Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This means it's recognized by the United States government as an important place. It helps us understand the history and culture of the country. Being on this list helps protect the district and its historic buildings for future generations to enjoy.
