Svante Nilsson (born around 1460, died January 2, 1512) was an important Swedish nobleman. He served as the leader, or regent, of Sweden from 1504 to 1512. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king or queen is too young or unable to rule. Svante Nilsson was also the father of Sten Sture the Younger. Sten Sture the Younger later became a regent of Sweden too. This was during a time known as the Kalmar Union.

Early Life and Family
Svante Nilsson was born around 1460. His birthplace was Penningby Castle in Uppland, Sweden. His father was Nils Bosson Sture. Nils Bosson Sture belonged to a powerful family called the Natt och Dag dynasty.
Svante's mother was Birgitta Tordsdotter Bonde. She was part of the Bonde family. She was also a cousin of King Charles VIII of Sweden.
A Role in Swedish Politics
Svante Nilsson became a member of the Privy Council of Sweden by 1482. The Privy Council was a group of important advisors to the ruler. At first, Svante did not agree with his distant relative, Sten Sture the Elder. Sten Sture the Elder was also a regent of Sweden.
Svante even supported King John of Denmark for a time. King John ruled Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under the Kalmar Union. Later, Svante changed his mind. He then helped Sten Sture the Elder remove King John from power in Sweden.
Becoming Regent of Sweden
Sten Sture the Elder died in 1503. After his death, Svante Nilsson became the new head of state. He took on the role of regent in January 1504. He worked to lead Sweden during a challenging time.
In the summer of 1511, the Privy Council asked Svante to step down. They felt he had not done enough to protect Sweden from Danish attacks. However, Svante Nilsson continued to lead the country. He remained in power until he passed away.
Death and Legacy
Svante Nilsson died in Arboga on January 2, 1512. He was buried in Västerås Cathedral. His first marriage was in 1486 to Iliana Gisladotter Gädda. They had a son named Sten Sture the Younger. Sten Sture the Younger grew up to be an important leader. He also became a regent of Sweden, just like his father.
Svante Nilsson married a second time in 1504. His second wife was Mette Dyre.
