Svetlana Kana Radević (born November 21, 1937 – died November 8, 2000) was a famous architect from Yugoslavia. She is known as the first female architect from Montenegro. Her amazing designs won her two important national awards for architecture.
Early Life and Education
Svetlana Kana Radević was born on November 21, 1937, in Cetinje, Yugoslavia. She went to elementary school there. Later, she finished high school in Titograd (which is now called Podgorica).
She studied architecture at the University of Belgrade. After that, she earned a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. She also continued her studies in Japan. Her time in Japan greatly influenced how she designed buildings later on.
Architectural Style and Achievements
Svetlana Kana Radević had a very special way of designing buildings. She carefully chose materials that would make her buildings fit in with their surroundings. Her designs often looked strong and powerful.
Her most famous work is the Hotel Podgorica. She won a big award for this hotel in 1967. The hotel shows her unique style very well. She used stone, which is a traditional building material. But she used it in new and interesting ways, making parts of the building stick out. Even though it's a large concrete building, it looks like it has always been part of the landscape.
Another important project was the Monument to the Fallen Soldiers of Lješanska nahija in Barutana. This design also won a national competition in 1975. Svetlana Kana Radević was a respected member of the Doclean Academy of Sciences and Arts. She was also the first vice president of Matica crnogorska. She was even a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences.
Svetlana Kana Radević passed away on November 8, 2000.
