Svetlana Katok is a mathematician from Russia and America. She was born on May 1, 1947. She teaches math as a professor at Pennsylvania State University.

Learning and Work

Svetlana grew up in Moscow, Russia. She earned a master's degree in math from Moscow State University in 1969. At that time, it was hard for some people to continue their studies. So, she taught math to younger students for several years instead.

In 1978, she moved to the United States. She then earned her highest degree, a doctorate, from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1983. Her teacher for this degree was Don Zagier. In 1990, she started working as a professor at Pennsylvania State University.

In 1995, Katok started a math journal called Electronic Research Announcements of the American Mathematical Society. A journal is like a magazine for new research. In 2007, its name changed to Electronic Research Announcements in Mathematical Sciences. She still helps manage this important journal.

Svetlana Katok was also a member of the main council for the American Mathematical Society (AMS).

Books She Wrote

Svetlana Katok has written several math books:

  • Fuchsian Groups, published in 1992. This book is about special groups in math.
  • p-adic Analysis Compared with Real, published in 2007. This book compares different types of math analysis.

She also helped edit another book. It was called MASS Selecta: Teaching and learning advanced undergraduate mathematics.

Awards and Special Honors

In 2004, Svetlana Katok received a special honor. She was chosen as the Emmy Noether Lecturer by the Association for Women in Mathematics. This award celebrates women who have done great work in math.

In 2012, both she and her husband, who is also a mathematician named Anatole Katok, became fellows of the American Mathematical Society. Being a fellow means they are recognized for their excellent contributions to math.
