Noether Lecture facts for kids
The Noether Lecture is a special talk series that celebrates women who have made really important and lasting contributions to mathematics. It's named after Emmy Noether, who was one of the most brilliant mathematicians of her time.
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) started these annual lectures in 1980. At first, they were called the Emmy Noether Lectures. Later, in 2013, they were renamed the AWM-AMS Noether Lecture. Since 2015, the American Mathematical Society (AMS) has also helped sponsor them. The person chosen to give the lecture presents it at the yearly American Joint Mathematics Meetings, which happen every January.
There's also another lecture series called the ICM Emmy Noether Lecture. This one is supported by the International Mathematical Union. It started in 1994 and is given at the International Congress of Mathematicians, which takes place every four years. In 2010, this lecture series became a permanent event.
The 2021 Noether Lecture was planned to be given by Andrea Bertozzi from UCLA. However, it was cancelled. This decision happened during a time when many people in the nation were speaking out about fairness and equality. Even though Professor Bertozzi planned to talk about other math topics, some of her research involved the mathematics of policing. Because of the public discussions happening, the lecture was cancelled.
Honoring Mathematicians
The Noether Lecture series is a wonderful way to recognize the amazing work of women in mathematics. Each year, a different mathematician is chosen to share her insights and discoveries.
Here are some of the talented women who have given the Noether Lecture:
Year | Name | Lecture title |
---|---|---|
1980 | F. Jessie MacWilliams | A Survey of Coding Theory |
1981 | Olga Taussky-Todd | The Many Aspects of Pythagorean Triangles |
1988 | Karen K. Uhlenbeck | Moment Maps in Stable Bundles: Where Analysis Algebra and Topology Meet |
1998 | Dusa McDuff | Symplectic Structures - A New Approach to Geometry |
2006 | Ingrid Daubechies | Mathematical Results and Challenges in Learning Theory |
2015 | Wen-Ching Winnie Li | Modular forms for congruence and noncongruence |
2022 | Marianna Csörnyei | The Kakeya needle problem for rectifiable sets |
2024 | Anne Schilling | The Ubiquity of Crystal Bases |
International Emmy Noether Lecturers
The ICM Emmy Noether Lecture also celebrates leading women in mathematics on an international stage. These lectures are given less often, every four years, at a very large meeting of mathematicians from all over the world.
Here are some of the mathematicians who have given the ICM Emmy Noether Lecture:
Year | Name |
---|---|
1994 | Olga Ladyzhenskaya |
2006 | Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat |
2018 | Sun-Yung Alice Chang |
2022 | Marie-France Vignéras |
