Svitlana Azarova, a talented composer.

Svitlana Azarova (born on January 9, 1976) is a Ukrainian-Dutch composer. She writes contemporary classical music, which is a style of music created in recent times. Svitlana was born in Ukraine, which was then part of the Ukrainian SSR.

Early Life and Musical Journey

Svitlana Azarova was born in a city called Izmail in Ukraine. She started her musical journey by studying music at the Odesa Pedagogical Institute. She finished her studies there in 1996.

Learning to Compose

After her first degree, Svitlana went to the Odesa Conservatory. This is a special school for music. There, she focused on musical composition, which means learning how to create music. She had two teachers for composition: first Oleksandr Krasotov, and then Karmella Tsepkolenko until the year 2000.

International Opportunities

Svitlana's talent led her to many exciting opportunities. In 2003, she received a special scholarship called Gaude Polonia. This allowed her to study for six months at the Frédéric Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland. Later that same year, she was invited to another scholarship project in Dresden, Germany. This project, called pass_ПОРТ, also met again in Munich in 2007.

In 2005, Svitlana received another grant from KulturKontakt Austria. This helped her attend the 9th International Academy for New Composition and Audio-Art in Seefeld, Tirol, Austria. After this, she moved to The Hague in the Netherlands. In 2006, she began advanced studies at the conservatoire in Amsterdam. She studied with Theo Loevendie and earned her Master of Music degree in December 2007.

Svitlana has also been a composer-in-residence at several places. This means she was invited to stay and create music there. These places include:

  • The Visby International Centre for Composers (VICC) in Gotland, Sweden (in 2007, 2015, 2016, and 2023)
  • The Czech Music Information Centre in Prague, Czech Republic (in 2008)
