Sweden is a small place in Jefferson County, Arkansas, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

Sweden is located about 16 miles (26 km) east of a larger city called Pine Bluff. On January 22, 2012, a strong tornado, called an EF2 tornado, hit Sweden. It caused damage to farm buildings like grain bins. The tornado then moved on to another area in Arkansas County.

Learning in Sweden: Schools and Districts

Students living in Sweden attend schools that are part of the Pine Bluff School District. This district includes schools for different age groups.

Current Schools Serving Sweden

  • For very young children (preschool), there is Park/Greenville School.
  • Elementary school students go to James Matthews Elementary School.
  • Middle school students attend Robert F. Morehead Middle School.
  • High school students go to Dollarway High School.

How School Districts Changed Over Time

Sweden used to be part of the Altheimer School District. Over the years, school districts in the area have combined to form larger ones.

  • In 1979, the Altheimer and Sherrill school districts joined together.
  • Then, in 1993, this new district became the Altheimer Unified School District.
  • Later, in 2006, the Altheimer Unified School District merged with the Dollarway School District. This meant students from Altheimer-Sherrill High School moved to Dollarway High School when their old school closed in 2007. Altheimer Martin Elementary School also closed in 2013.

Recent School District Mergers

More recently, in December 2020, the Arkansas State Board of Education decided that the Dollarway School District would join with the Pine Bluff School District. This change happened on July 1, 2021.

  • After this merger, the new, larger Pine Bluff School District began running all the schools from both original districts.
  • The areas where students lived and the schools they attended mostly stayed the same for the 2021–2022 school year.
  • However, all preschool students in the entire Pine Bluff School District, including the area that used to be Dollarway, now go to Forrest Park/Greenville School.
  • In 2023, it was announced that Dollarway High School would combine with Pine Bluff High School. Also, Robert F. Morehead Middle School will become the only middle school for all students in the Pine Bluff School District.
